Well, we will all be voting for the presidency this coming Friday. It seems to me that none of the candidates apart from the incumbent have really caught hold of the imagination of the people. Yes they have worked very hard, and yes they have performed on TV and on radio, and they have really done their very best to appeal to us, the voters. But somehow it has not come off, and it seems, if opinion polls are to be believed, that the incumbent Michael D. Higgins is the person to whom the majority of voters will give their allegiance on voting day.

So much to talk about, so little space.

Well what a thrilling and wonderful weekend we had last Saturday and Sunday. Hurling has become the new game to watch, to reflect upon, to talk about, and to exult in the sheer strength and vitality of the players.

Sinn Féin’s new leader Mary Lou McDonald made a whistle-stop visit to Galway last Thursday and, despite that day’s chaotic traffic and torrential rain, she found time to sit with me and talk about issues like Brexit, Stormont, and entering government in the Republic.

I hope all the readers of the Advertiser newspapers are enjoying this amazing weather even though complaints are coming in from farmers and other people who stand to be disadvantaged because of no grass growth which is understandable.

I know, readers, that you are probably fed up with talk of the weather, but we simply have to talk more about it!

Well, so much happened in the last week, and most of it during the weekend.

I am going to talk with you all a bit this week about the whole Brexit business. Now, I am sure, like me, a lot of you have heard it going on all summer in bits and pieces, but it seems to be becoming serious now with Michel Barnier from the EU and David Davis from the UK having their serious talks together. But, as yet, no real outcome has emerged.

Well! There’s no doubt where I’m going to begin this column this week, and it is about last Sunday in Croke Park. Now I know this column extends to both Roscommon and Mayo so I hope the Mayo readers will excuse me when I go on a little bit about Roscommon.
